What lactose intolerance means is that your body is unable to digest lactose. Lactose is a sugar that fresh milk products contain naturally, and you need to have the enzyme lactase present to break it down so that your body can absorb it properly. The reason why people can be affected differently when consuming milk products is that some may produce some lactase, while others produce little to none. It is not uncommon for lactase production to drop off as we age, which is why lactose intolerance is more common in adults, especially seniors.
While it may seem an easy fix to simply avoid milk products to eliminate the cramps, gas, diarrhea, and bloating that indicate lactose intolerance, you are then missing out on the calcium and vitamin D that are present in fresh milk products. Milk alternatives can give you the feeling and enjoyment but are often lacking in vitamin D and calcium. There are other sources that you can include in your diet, such as tofu, leafy greens, beans, broccoli, eggs, fatty fish, liver, and foods that have been fortified with calcium and/or vitamin D. If you do not believe you are getting enough, the solution is taking health supplements.
At Herbal Nutrition with Lisa, I can help you with health supplements to bridge the gap between the nutrition you can get from the foods that you eat and what you need to be healthy. I will be happy to discuss any particular challenges you face, such as lactose intolerance, and recommend the right health supplements for your situation. For example, if you aren’t getting enough calcium and vitamin D for healthy teeth and bone mineral density, Herbalife’s Xtra-Cal® Advanced could be a good option for you.
