There is one thing that any diet plan faces, whether it’s a sustainable plan or a fad. It is “I can’t follow this because I hate _________.” In fact, people tend to gravitate to whatever plan lets them have what they love and doesn’t make them eat what they don’t. The problem with this is that if you keep eating the same things that caused you to gain weight, chances are you won’t lose any or you’ll quickly gain it back if you do. So, what do you do if you hate certain foods, and why is good nutrition is still possible even if you do?
The first thing to do is determine why you hate certain foods and love others. There are a vast number of theories about this, not to mention scientific studies, and the result is that there are many things that could be determining what you enjoy and what you don’t. Some believe that what your mother ate when she was pregnant can affect your taste preferences. Others think DNA factors in and determines how many tastebuds you have, and the more you have, the harder it is to like strong flavors, be they salty, bitter, or sweet.
Childhood is another contributor, not only in childhood illnesses that can affect how taste signals are received in the brain, but also how children learn by example. Even as adults, our tastes can change. One bout with food poisoning can turn you off a certain food, for example. A strong desire to expand your palate is entirely possible, as the mind can be far stronger than your taste buds.
So, now that you might know why you hate certain foods and love others, you can take some steps to change that. If you can overpower your taste buds with strong thought processes, you can find yourself loving the better foods that provide good nutrition rather than things that make it difficult to maintain your weight. You don’t have to go it alone, however, as nutrition supplements can help make up certain shortfalls and also make up for some deficiencies in food quality, which isn’t as good as it was in past decades.
